About The Seminary
The Jesus Seminary is a prestigious theological training institute focused on equipping believers and ministers with biblical knowledge. Our programs range from certificates to PhD.
We are an ecumenical seminary founded in 2010 in Kathmandu, Nepal, to train tomorrow’s theological leaders. It is designed to be a practical seminary with an emphasis on Christian leadership and outreach.
WHY IS SUCH A SEMINARY NEEDED? Most Seminaries today focus on theory. While important, it does not properly train pastors and leaders in how to make the Gospel of Christ relevant. Most focus on simply getting saved and then waiting for Heaven. The Christian life is much more detailed and definitely more exciting than that.
PASTORS ARE COMMUNITY LEADERS. In places like Africa and Asia, pastors are respected leaders in their churches A pastor needs to be further recognized as a community leader who cares about the life of the community. They are respected leaders and teachers. They can and should help to organize their people, fighting for their advancement in all aspects of life. The Jesus Seminary aims to teach pastors to be a community leader as they share God’s love.
STRONG EMPHASIS ON AGRO-EVANGELISM. In places like Africa and Asia, as much as 80% of the population are involved in agriculture. The problem is that most are farming on small plots of land, and do not farm profitably. All Jesus Seminary graduates have been trained in organic farming through the Kenya Institute of Organic Farming (KIOF). Graduates in the Diploma level as well as Master’s Level will have a government recognized certificate in Organic Farming. This will allow pastors to be able to teach organic farming.
WHY IS ORGANIC FARMING IMPORTANT? Organic farming is environmentally sound as well as cost effective. By farming organically, farmers will increase their income by reducing dependance on expensive commercial fertilizers. Organic farming does not destroy the local ecologies.
WHAT OTHER ADVANTAGES IN TEACHING FARMING? Graduates become advocates for their communities. They help people to learn more profitable crops they can grow, thereby increasing income on small acre farms. They can help the community to organize ways to sell crops to new and better markets. The pastor becomes the community teacher, thereby gaining greater trust among the local people which will allow people to be more open to the Gospel of Christ.
WHO STARTED THE JESUS SEMINARY? The Jesus Seminary was started in 2010 by the late Dr. George P. Pierce, an American missionary who came to Nepal at the age of 77. It originally offered only a PhD-level degree, as Dr. Pierce envisioned the Jesus Seminary as a place to train leaders. Nepal is new to Christianity, and he saw dedicated pastors but lacked strong, highly educated leaders to develop a strong church. Dr. Pierce died in 2018.
CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP EMPHASIZED. Christian leadership is very different from the ways of the world. It is all about servant leadership, which Jesus showed us by example. Students learn using the Holy Bible as the model for learning leadership. Churches need quality leaders to develop churches filled with disciples for Jesus Christ.
With all the talk about agriculture and leadership, do you teach the Bible? Absolutely! All students study the Holy Bible as part of their regular coursework. However, they learn to communicate the message of Scripture effectively to a world in need of its teachings. Students learn how to make the Holy Bible relevant to listeners by making it practical for life today in Africa and Asia.
WHAT IS THE COURSE OF STUDY? All students study the Holy Bible, Church History, Systematic Theology, Comparative Religion, Christian Leadership, Church and Personal Finance, Christian Ethics, Organic Farming, and Principles of Business.
WHAT DEGREES DO YOU TEACH? The Basic Course of Study takes 26 weeks and is taught at our sub-campuses. It is a basic course designed for those entering Christian service or exploring pastoral ministry. The Diploma Course of Study is a more detailed two-year program. Designed for training pastors, the program now prepares graduates for church leadership. The next level is a Master of Divinity, a two-year program that goes into greater depth. Graduates of the Master’s Program are quality leaders wherever they choose to do ministry. The final program is Doctor of Theology (PhD). This course typically takes three to five years and is an independent study. Each student will publish their thesis, offering new research on a topic of choice. All will work with an academic advisor.
WHY DO YOU NOT OFFER A BACHELOR’S OF THEOLOGY? Dr. George P. Pierce observed that most pastors had to be bi-vocational to support their ministries. He wanted pastors to have a degree in something other than theology so they could financially support themselves and their families as they shared the Gospel of Christ.
We cultivate leaders who exemplify Christ's teachings and serve their communities with passion and integrity.
